Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

World Health Organisation(WHO),each year celebrates "World No tobacco Day" on May 31st."Tobacco Health Warning" is the theme selected by WHO,for this "No Tobacco Day" and for the following year ,2009.

Pictorial health warnings are considered an effective way to spread a word of caution among the tobacco users.Tobacco users tend to quit or reduce tobacco to great extent through these health warnings .

Do u really feel that these warnings are effective enough to press a person , reduce or quit smoking?Do these warnings make smokers think more about health risks of smoking? How many people ,who smoke ,really know about deadly consequences of smoking??

Tobacco
Hi Vandana:

I'm new to TIG. Just searched "tobacco" and found your post, among many others.

I would like to respond to your very good questions.

As a 30+ year anti-tobacco activist, I believe that there is no one single thing that will "make" any smoker quit. Rather, it's a combination of things: Peer pressure (just as it was a big factor in them STARTING smoking, it can be an equally big fact in them QUITTING), gentle 'nagging', ever-expanding smoking bans (yes, in some jurisdictions, even into smokers' own vehicles and homes!), raising the price of cigarettes and other tobacco products, the banning of tobacco advertising and sponsorship of sporting and cultural events, etc. And yes, strong pictorial -- and text -- warnings on cigarette packages. All of those things -- and more -- contribute toward making smoking increasingly "socially unacceptable"...more and more difficult and, ultimately, more hassle than it's worth.

Bottom line: None of those things, individually or collectively, will "make" any smoker quit. Successful quitting will only happen when the smoker makes up her/his mind that it's time to quit. Furthermore, all of the quit smoking programs on the planet will not help any smoker quit unless s/he is strongly committed to quitting. Smokers MUST have an extremely strong desire to quit; otherwise, they're simply wasting their time/energy.

All of that said, I'd like to draw your attention to my Journey for a Tobacco-Free World ( www.tobaccofreeworld.ca and it's on the TIG events calendar, on May 31, 2010). We are looking for volunteers, both local and international. If you can help, that would be awesome. Thanks!
